Preparing an Existing Web for a DWT:

Step 1

Step 8
Step 9

Step 1

If you plan to attach a DWT to an existing web, and the existing web was built with a template, you will need to remove everything on the page except for your actual content.  We have chosen a more complex design to begin with, which requires a few extra steps.  Here is our initial web page, which is opened in FrontPage 2003 Design view:

Step 2

With your mouse, highlight JUST the content area of your page (highlighted area below is in shades of blue).  Now, follow these steps to eliminate everything EXCEPT the highlighted content area:
  1. Press CTRL + C (this copies the highlighted area to the clipboard)
  2. Press CTRL + A (this selects the entire page contents)
  3. Press the Delete key on your keyboard (this eliminated the entire page contents)
  4. Press CTRL + V (this pastes the content from Step 1 onto your page)

Step 3

Your page now looks like this.  Note that we still have tables, left over from the original design, so we're not through yet.  If your content was contained within a single cell on the web page you are preparing, you may be able to bypass the steps between here and attachment of the DWT.

Step 4

Place your cursor inside the left content area of the page, and select Table, Convert, Table to Text.

Step 5

WHAT HAPPENED?  The table isn't gone!  This may or may not happen in your preparation, depending on how the original design was structured.  In our original design, there are actually three tables - two of which are "nested" inside the main table.  With your cursor still in the left area, again select Table, Convert, Table to Text.

Step 6

There!  That converted the left side to text, getting rid of the table and leaving the screenshot below.

Step 7

Now, place your cursor inside the remaining table and select Table, Convert, Table to Text until you are left with a clean page, free of tables.  As you can see, all that remains of our original design is the background and your content text.  You don't need to worry about the background, as it is defined by the design and will change when you attach a different DWT.

Step 8

Now we are attaching the DWT to the page.  If your Folder List is not open, open it now (View, Folder List in the FrontPage menu bar).  Left click over the file name you have open in Design view to ensure it is the only selected file.  Go to Format, Dynamic Web Template, Attach Dynamic Web Template in the FrontPage main menu.  Browse to the template you wish to attach and select it.  You will be prompted to "Choose Editable Region for Content," as shown below.  Left click over the (Body) to highlight it, then select body1 from the pull-down for the New Region.  Confirm with OK to continue the attachment.

Step 9

That's it.  You will notice that any formatting you had assigned within the content area on the original web page has been carried forward to the new page.  You will also note that since you did not remove your original page from the navigation structure, nor did you rename it, all navigation menus and page banner information now appears within your page.  Additionally, your Page Title, description, and keywords (if present) have been retained.

At this point, depending on the design of the DWT you are using and the content of your web, you may choose to move some of your body1 content into other regions on the page.  Simply cut and paste from one Editable Region to another.
